4th Grade Computers

The 4th grade class has been so very busy these past few weeks.  We have completed the keyboarding lessons that we began the first week of August.  Having been introduced to the complete keyboard through a series of 14 lessons has taken almost this entire semester. There will be continued keyboarding practice at the beginning of every class...accuracy, not speed is what I appreciate from these students....I remind them that this is a lifelong skill that will guide them throughout their educational career and into their professional lives.

The students have also prepared a Google slide presentation about themselves and their families.  I remind them of how their interest have changed since kindergarten, so I enjoy learning about their current interest. The students are giving their presentations in front of their peers---a good learning experience.

Also, the 4th graders are participating in 'coding.'  This is basically computer programming. It is amazing how quickly the students learn this technique...and are having such fun.  I would expect that the students will be doing this over Christmas break.

I so enjoy the 4th graders.

It is unbelievable that this semester is almost over...

Have a wonderful Christmas break.

Pre-School 2 year olds

Adorable is watching the 2 year old class walk down the hall on their rope with handles. Of course, this is a safety measure to keep the children walking all in the same direction etc.  Their little eyes are wide open just looking at their surroundings.  They have been going to  chapel, but are just now feeling comfortable venturing out too much further.  They actually made it all the way to the computer lab this week.  They sat on the floor while I demonstrated the 2 apps we were going to play.  This procedure is all new to them, but they did great.  ...now to actually keep them on the app that we are working on for the day is the next big challenge. :)

They are precious!!...and I am so thankful for these children.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

2nd Grade Computers

The students work with their tablets almost daily in the classrooms, and occasionally the children bring them to the lab.  This week we started working with an app called Book Creator.  Collaboration is the term used when we are exploring and investigating something new and sharing ideas. This is exactly what the students did with this app. They were allowed  to take pictures, write and illustrate, add sound, and then compose a small booklet.  It was so fun to see students offer help when we ran into a problem.  The students were then able to share their story.
Our next adventure with Book Creator will be to coordinate with their Social Studies curriculum. The students will research a topic, add pictures, and text from their study. Learning is so fun!!!

Enjoy this beautiful day.

3rd Grade Computers

We are thankful for our blessings everyday of the year, but around Thanksgiving we always seem to be even more aware of these blessings.  We combined a word processing lesson about making columns on google docs with listing items we were thankful for. We verbally discussed many of their suggestions, then each child was asked to list as many as they could in the allotted time. The students also added a Thanksgiving theme clip art for their assignment.  Please check out the 3rd graders work in the hall outside of the lab.  ....I am very thankful for these students and their hearts.

Have a good weekend.

Kindergarten Computer Class

The first nine weeks in the Kindergarten class was spent learning about how important computers are in our lives.  We also learned about some of the special keys in word processing--space bar, enter, backspace, delete and Esc.  Some of these keys are used in many of the games the children play, but take on a totally different meaning when learning about word processing.

This nine weeks we have started a sound booklet...meaning we are using Google drawing to write the sound from the High Hat series and then we will draw a picture about that sound.  This is an activity we will continue throughout the year.

Also, since our Thanksgiving season is here, I like to print out a copy of their hand-print using Google drawing. They will make their hand look like a turkey and then of course, they will be put in the hall.....they are indeed precious.

Kindergarten continues to love www.starfall.com.

Have a fun and safe Halloween!

Pre-Kindergarten Computers

Starting the class with www.turtlediary.com has been our format the past several weeks. We review the alphabet letter the students have had that week and then color and print this letter.
So often our lessons are some-type of reinforcement activities that the students have had that week. The children also had fun with the Holiday section on abcya.com making different pumpkins shapes and decorating their faces etc.
We are definitely into a routine and the children know exactly what to expect (however, they usually have to tell me something very important before we can start our lesson).:)
All in all...we have fun and hopefully are learning some basic computer skills even at this early age.

Have a great Fall weekend.

Pre-School Computers

Having the Pre-School on Tuesday and Friday mornings is a great way to start the day.  We have actually gotten our procedures down pretty well--meaning they come into the lab and sit on the floor in front of the projector screen and listen to our instructions for the day. --They usually have to tell me something before we begin though--which is adorable.
These past  few weeks we have been reviewing the letter they are focusing on in the classroom.  I have a website that gives a short video of that letter and then we color and print out the letter.
Since this is our Halloween month, we chose www.abcya.com and their Holiday section to design our own pumpkins.  The children are very creative and made funny designs.

Your children are precious and I always enjoy their hugs as they leave the classroom.

4th Grade Computers

Fourth graders actually come to computer class twice a week.  On Thursday afternoon the class only concentrates on keyboarding.  Keyboarding through third grade is introduction and review of the home row keys.  Our fourth graders are now learning the entire keyboard through a series of 14 lessons. Then our keyboarding will consists of online typing programs.  This is a life-time skill that they will probably never even remember learning.

On Friday, the students actually come for computer class and now we are working on their Google slide presentation about themselves. The students are so very creative and transitioning from PowerPoint with Microsoft Office to Google slides has been so very smooth. Giving their presentations to their classmates is always an exciting time.

3rd Grade Computers

Third graders have had some exciting new adventures with technology this year.  The Chromebooks that have been added are an additional learning tool that are used in the classroom and occasionally in the lab.  Most of the Google applications are similar to Microsoft Office....so this has been an easy transition. We had fun exploring Google drawing and learned from each other..quite interactive. Using the Google drive helps one to stay organized by making folders and these students are learning those skills.

I always love to have the students write and this week they wrote a short paragraph about themselves and added a fun clip art...which we printed.

Have a great weekend.

2nd Grade Computers

Part of the class this week  was spent reviewing the proper ways to care for our computers, laptops, iPads, tablets and any other digital device the students may have.  Each of these tools is expensive, so there was quite a discussion about caring and the consequences of not caring for these items. I even suggested that they were old enough to be in charge of all DVD movies at home--keeping them in their cases when not in use.
The 2nd graders like to write about themselves, so after  opening  Google docs, the students  wrote a healthy paragraph about their interest. We printed the documents... I was impressed..and am not overly concerned about having every word spelled correctly.  That will come later....I just want them to enjoy writing.
Time is always allotted for the children to play on one of their websites they enjoy..and this week it was www.abcya.com. They love to play the math games especially---having fun and improving math skills...that's pretty good.

Have a great week and weekend.

1st Grade Computers

It is very obvious that 1st graders like to write and seeing your name in print is so fun--for any age actually.  We have spent these past few weeks reviewing the special keys that were introduced in Kindergarten, writing our name--changing font sizes and colors, and then writing 3 sentences about ourselves and illustrating.  The first grade teachers were able to put these stories on their outside wall in the hall for Open House. The children are proud of their work, as they should be. We have also had fun on several websites, especially www.abcya.com.  Mrs. Jones' class worked with www.starfall.com this past week and enjoyed the 1st grade activities.  Our technology has added another tool for these students to progress at their own rate. I am so very proud of these children.

Have a hopefully cooler weekend.

Kindergarten Computers

We have been so busy this year in Kindergarten computer class.  The students remembered the procedures from last year, and our new students quickly followed their examples. After discussing where all we have computers for a class period, the last few weeks have been spent introducing functions of special keys like Enter, Space Bar, Backspace, Esc.  Some of the keys are used with our games, etc, but we wanted the students to know how to use these keys with our word processing program.  These skills will be practiced over and over as we write our words, our sentences and eventually our stories.  We have had some color sheets that go with each lesson just to remind us of our lesson.  Each week we also have a fun website the children always enjoy. Tablets are used in the classroom as well as in the lab.

Your children are so special.  Thank you for choosing

Pre-Kindergarten

Our Pre-Kindergarten children seem so confident coming into the computer lab.  They quickly remembered the procedures from last year and were able to be an example to any new student this year. In our Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten classes, fun websites are usually used.  Learning to maneuver the mouse is quite an accomplishment and many master this skill very quickly.  The tablets are such an amazing addition to our curriculum, and are being used in the classroom; however, every few weeks the students will bring them to the lab and we will investigate a new app.  We did that this week with Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Tidwell's classes.  We are very relaxed...sometimes just sitting on the floor or sometimes at the tables. There are so many different apps to choose from, and this week we just had fun with Peppa Paintbox. I love seeing  the children's reactions to the skill they are practicing.

Love love this group of children..

Have a wonderful weekend.

Pre-School-3 Year Olds

Three year old children learn very quickly, and already these children have adapted to their schedules.  Mrs. Pickard and Mrs. Roger's classes come to the lab at 8:15 on their scheduled days.  Actually, it is quite a journey just from their classroom to the lab, but they handle it beautifully.  The children always come into the lab and sit on the floor in front of the big screen on the wall.  I will demonstrate the website that we will be exploring for the day, and then each child goes to their designated computer.  Learning to use the mouse is a motor skill that is challenging for their little hands, but is a skill that is quickly mastered.  The tablets will be used in the classroom, but occasionally will be used in the lab as well.
This week we were matching shapes on www.abcya.com/pre-k/skills/shape match. The children did great...and was fun to hear
"I did it."

Adorable ...is all I can say.

Have a great weekend.

Pre-School-2 year olds

If you want to see adorable, then visit the 2 year old class.  Spending a few minutes with them on Monday morning was such a treat for me.  My goal for now is for them to get to know me and for me to have some interaction with them. The children had play time before I came, so were actually ready for some quiet time and circle time.  Children love to be read to, and these 2 year olds are no exception.  They were good listeners.  Monday mornings are going to be a special time for me each week.

Again..'adorable' is the word for this class.

Have a wonderful weekend.
