Computers-Field Day

Field day was the best ever!  The event was rescheduled for this past Monday, because of rainy weather the previous week.  Coach Freud's theme was 'It Happens Every Spring'...a baseball movie. Some of the activities reflected the history of baseball in Nashville.

Children like to write stories.  The assignment for both the 1st and 2nd grade classes was to write a story about field day.  It is so much fun to write a story on the computer because the children are allowed to change their font style and color.  All stories were using 30 as their font size.  The 2nd grade inserted and resized their picture using Google search. The 1st graders illustrated their stories back in their classroom. Their stories are in the hall outside of the lab.  I am so proud of the enthusiasm the students had composing their work.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Eating healthy is challenging for any age group. One responsibility we have as teachers is to educate our children concerning nutrition. Every year the website entitled Myplate.gov presents fun and informative information about our health.  Like I tell my students...God gave us 1 body...and it is our responsibility to care for our body.  This lesson encourages so much discussion...which is good.
The second grade classes had fun with Google drawing dividing a plate  into the different food groups and inserting a picture from that group. Drawing the plate, inserting text, searching for the appropriate food group and resizing were part of this assignment. Then the  activity was then printed. The students did great!

The sun is shining...have a great weekend.

Third Grade Computers

Tuesday afternoon is always a fun time when the 3rd grade class comes to the lab.  Our first activity is keyboarding. The students have mastered the home row keys, so after Christmas we began learning the entire keyboard.  The website we are using is www.mikids.com.  Gradually over the past several weeks, the students have become quite proficient in their keyboarding skills. Of course, this is a continual process and skills will improve year after year.

The past several weeks, we have worked on coding, making a flyer, reviewing solids, liquids and gases and of course websites that can improve our math and language arts skills.

Google sheets will be introduced this next class period with making a spreadsheet using Skittles. We will also make a chart from our data and print this activity.  The fun part about this activity is receiving a skittle as we leave class.

A really respectful class.

Have a lovely spring weekend.

PK Computers

Normal procedures for the PK classes continues each class period. The children enter the lab and sit on the floor facing the projector screen.  We always start the class with the nursery rhyme video, which this week was 'Hickory Hickory Dock.' Looking at their faces while this video is playing is priceless.
Our next activity is to review their letter for the week through a website entitled Turtlediary.  The children will color a picture on the computer that corresponds with that letter.
Then the students were introduced to the arrow keys on the keyboard which enabled the children to work a maze activity on www.belmikri.com.  There was a mouse trying to get to a block of cheese....fun.
Finally, practicing their 'ABC's' was fun using a dot-to-dot activity on this website.    ....Precious class.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The PS-3 classes definitely know the correct procedures to come into the lab.  This week our curriculum guide had our video as 'The Three Little Bears'...I love to see their eyes watching this video.
After that our letter of the week was 'T' and Turtlediary offers a quick review of our sounds plus illustrations.

Even though Easter was technically last Sunday, we continued to celebrate Spring with coloring Easter eggs.  Mouse skills  are reinforced on www.Internet4classrooms.com with  fun activities for the students.  They colored their eggs beautifully, and frequently I would hear 'I did it.' Sweet sweet children.

Spring will come...eventually 😊

Fourth graders are confident with their keyboarding skills...however, every class period begins with 8-9 minutes of practice. I remind the students that one day they will thank me.😊
This class has been so busy this 9 weeks with their Tennessee projects.  Some research was gathered about their character in the lab, while independent research was also needed.
A website that is entitled www.glogster.com (a digital poster) was introduced to the students. They were able to take the information they had learned from their previous research and create a digital poster or a Glogster.  Last Thursday evening the students presented their oral presentation to their parents and were also able to show their Glogster on their ChromeBook.
Our last project will be a Google slide presentation about Tennessee.  I am excited to see their creative work.

Kindergarten-Computers

The Kindergarten classes have been very busy since Christmas. The home row keys have been introduced to the students--1 letter a week for 8 weeks. Their High Hat sound that corresponded with a HRK key were reviewed also.  We continue to work on our sound booklet as well.

Our next project for Kindergarten will be to type a Safety booklet.  Our first document will be 'My name is...', with their own illustration. The next document will be 'My cell number is...', with an illustration of a cellphone.  The third document will be 'My address is....', with an illustration of their house, condo or apartment. I feel it is so important for our children to know this information.

First Grade

Having the First grade class come into the lab is always an active class time.:)  However, the students know our procedures well, so we are able to begin our lesson promptly.  After spending time watching and discussing a  video from Brainpop, we quickly had a keyboarding and word processing lesson about how the computer has its own margins to prevent us from typing to the very edge of the document.  Very often I empathize how the computer is our 'friend' and will help us with word processing skills.  (especially spell check).
Worldbookonline.com is a website that allows children to listen to fun stories. These stories were all about Trek and his adventures. With their own headphones, the children enjoyed listening to these stories.
Easter is just around the corner, so next week the students will need to draw some spring pictures on Google drawings which will be displayed in the hall.

The winter Olympics have been exciting for all grades.  We have researched the different continents, events and athletes. Google word documents, Google drawing, and Google sheets have been used to complete assignments. This week the students pretended like they were one of the athletes and described their experience using Google Docs, and of course inserted a picture of their event. The  first time the 2nd grade students were introduced to Google sheets the project was to calculate our favorite types of cookies...I think chocolate chip was the winner.  This week we will use Google sheets again to calculate the  medals that the top 4 countries won.....hoping USA is at the top.   This assignment will be printed.  The 2nd graders are always engaged in our computer time together....great classes.

The Art Zone... Paul Klee with 1st Grade

First Grade took a look at the works of Paul Klee. Specifically his piece tittled "Cat and Bird". We talked about how it didn't look like a traditional, or realistic drawing but the artist chose to give it more of an abstract style. After discussing about more about what abstract art is, we broke out our chalk pastels and got to work with our own abstract cats.

I think they did a spectacular job!

PS-3

The PS-3 classes have made such progress since the beginning of school.  They are well adjusted to the procedures of entering the computer lab and sitting on the floor in front of the room.  We always begin the class the same way...with a short nursery rhyme from their classroom curriculum and then a review of the letter they are having for the week.  The children always color that  letter from the website www.Internet4classrooms.com.  Next the students are shown the website we will be using for the class and this week it was from www.sesamestreet.org.  The children were able to draw on a Valentine picture and dress Elmo and Abby with different Valentine costumes.  All of these activities require the children to use their motor skills for the mouse.  They are totally amazing!!!

The Art Zone... Stepping Stone Love

Febuary is just full of love and with the help of the Stepping Stones program, the love is spilling into EH's hallways. We've worked hard working on our motor skills while learning about color and having fun.

The two year olds learned if you smoosh red and white paint together that it becomes pink!

The preschool class worked on color mixing and making different shades of pink and purple. They also worked on fine moter skills as they used cotton swabs to paint.

Pre-K worked on keeping control of their cotton swabs by filling their hearts full of poka-dots. I'm also proud of their scissor skills as they carefully cut out their hearts so we could glue them onto the purple paper.

A Special Stepping- Stones Report

This report from Coach Freud's Corner is going to highlight PK3 and PK4 in their physical education classes.  We focus on basic skills such as running, skipping, galloping, hopping and most of all following directions.  We realize how fragile emotions are for this age group, and success is just as important to three and four year olds as it is to third and fourth graders.

This week the "Stepping-Stones" kids have had a taste of competition with relays including the use of hula-hoops and gator-skin funballs.  The relays have included all of the skills listed above with a few twists of our own or rather their own twists.  They are so excited to be able to try something new, and they are learning to take turns, share, and the order of things.

Until next time, "Keep on Playing."

Third Grade Computers

Keyboarding lessons begin in January for our Kindergarten students. Learning and mastering the home row keys is the first step in being able to master the entire keyboard.  Our 3rd grade students have mastered these skills and are now being introduced to the other 18 characters on the keyboard.  Each week 2 new characters are introduced and practiced.  We are using www.mikids.com/keyboarding.  This is a 'life skill' that will benefit them throughout their educational and professional life.  So proud of these students!!
Our word processing project this week was to create a 'flyer' advertising our Open House.  Spacing, different fonts, different colors, and inserting an image were all used to create this lesson on Google Docs...

I am so proud of these children...great class!!!

February is the month of  'love' and we are taught from a very young age the amazing love that our God had for all of us on earth when He allowed His son to come as a baby.  John 3:16 is the text that is used as an acrostic spelling the word 'Valentine.' The students had several word processing skills in order to complete the assignment...and the end product is outside the computer lab...very impressive!!
The fourth graders will be very busy the rest of the year with research of their Famous Tennessean, a poster or Glogster of their character, and an Emaze presentation of Tennessee.
Of course, keyboarding is practiced every class period.

Soo proud of these students!!
Have a good weekend,
Mrs. Speck
