Kindergarten Computer Classes

My Kindergarten students are always eager for computer class.  Most of the time the class begins with a short video from  www.brainpopjr.com  and a brief discussion of that video.

We are working on a 'sound' booklet, which will not be completed until the end of the year.  The children are making text boxes, using the keyboard and then illustrating with their own drawing using crayons. Later we will learn how to insert the image that corresponds with their sound.

Our favorite websites have been:                             www.spellingcity.com                                                                        www.starfall.com and                                                                          www.abcya.com

I love having your children....
Enjoy your weekend.

My wish for everyone is that you have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and we all look forward to being back to school on November 28th.

First Grade Computers

A good time was had by all this week in computer class.  The students brought their tablets and we had fun exploring the app called 'Book Creator'. The children were able to take pictures throughout the room of their classmates or objects in the lab and then put them into their presentations with text.  Believe me, there was a lot of activity in this room, but the children had fun.  After Christmas we will create a storybook over a certain topic and even add pictures from the Internet, and perhaps even record our voices. I want the students to feel confident when exploring new programs or apps, and there were lots of smiles when they left the lab this week.

Have a good weekend.

In case you have not heard, we are having a presidential election next Tuesday, November 8th.  Our children have seen news coverage about these candidates and have  heard adults share thoughts and opinions.  Without giving any personal opinions about the political race, we shared 2 videos from www.scholastic.com explaining presidential procedures involving the voting process.  We all agreed that 'voting' is a special privilege  and one that every American of voting age should take advantage of this privilege.

Next we pretended that we were running for president and had to appoint 3 cabinet members and these members had to make sure the budget was balanced.  It was fun to see the selections of the students and working with percentages, they were actually able to balance their budgets.  The print out of this activity named them as President.....that was fun.

God Bless America and the Election of our country!!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Pre-School 2 Year Olds

Well..what can I say...not much except that they are pretty adorable...
I always start the class by calling each of their names...they love that...and then I show a short video of the nursery rhyme they have had that week....Next I try to show some pictures of their Bible story for the week or perhaps even the farm animals they have been talking about.  Finally comes the tablets......I show them which app we will be using for the day....that does not mean they stay on that app, but we are trying.  Even at 2 years old, their little fingers know exactly what to do...we are only into our second 9 weeks, but I feel we are learning procedures.. Most of them even know my name.

Again....they are adorable and are our future Seniors at
 Ezell-Harding.

Have a great fall weekend.

Pre-School 3 Computer Class

We continue to make progress....this is the first week of our 2nd 9 weeks of school and the children were so quiet coming into the lab that I did not even hear them....that speaks volumes for their teachers.  They are learning procedures and correct behavior...which is major in any classroom, but especially in the lab.  The letter 'G' was introduced in their classroom this week, so I am able to reinforce that introduction in the lab by showing a quick video from Turtlediary on letters.  We always color that letter from that website and print their work.
Sorting and patterning is also presented  in the classroom which we are able to reinforce with our websites in the lab.
A very fun week for the 3 year old class...glad we are back from break.

Have a wonderful weekend.

We also were able to enroll in  the full version of Starfall on our lab computers and their classroom tablets. I am sorry this subscription does not cover the students' home devices.

2nd Grade Computers

Some of our early class periods are spent with review of basic computer skills and the history of our computers....we talked about how glad we were to have these people invent the fun things we have today....like Chrome books....We said that in 25 years from now we will not believe we used to use something like Chrome books. :)

Open House is just a week away and having a printed document of a favorite scripture hanging in the hall  is always a must for 2nd grade.  This year the scripture is Galatians 5:22.  We all strive for these qualities of the Spirit daily....2nd graders are too.

Have a wonderful Labor Day holiday..

Coaches Carter and Freud's PE Blog

9/1/16

August is now behind us, but the hot weather is still with us which has created issues with PE coupled with the elementary playground still under construction.  We have also had to deal with the loss of the gym due to the installation of new lighting and the gym undergoing a new paint job.  To make matters worse, we have lost the air conditioning in the gym which results in activity adjustments.  We have had to resort to playing some of the games normally reserved for the winter months when activities outdoors are not possible.  Our students have adjusted fairly well, but all of us are anxious to enjoy being outside and especially checking out the renovated playground.

3rd Grade Computers

Third graders were so very eager to get their Chromebooks for the first time. Occasionally they will bring their CB's to the lab during their computer class time. This past week, we were learning about how to insert different backgrounds---of course they were all different by the time they finished experimenting.   Fun..

The Olympics have been so exciting, so we waited until the events were over to get an accurate medal account.  This was put into a Google worksheet and then was converted to a bar graph...with our data. Later in the year we will use data from the Skittles candy to make another graph...Again fun and easy.

Your students are ready to learn and I thoroughly enjoy the time they spend in the lab.

Have a wonderful weekend.

The Olympics have been so exciting to watch and the students love to talk about their favorite event.  Our assignment this week was to actually write about one of the events using Google docs and insert an image from our Google search engine into their writing. They were able to format with different font styles and text color. These documents were then printed and hung in the hall outside the computer lab.
Keyboarding skills are first introduced in kindergarten and home row keys are continually being reinforced through 3rd grade. The 4th graders will begin advanced keyboarding instruction and should be keyboard proficient by late November.  Watch how your students progress...it's exciting.

Hope to see you tonight at the Crimson and White football game.

Hello there,

My name is Mrs. Speck...I am the Elementary Computer teacher.  Your child will come to the lab once a week and with the exception of the PS and PK classes, an instructional computer lesson will always be given.  Each week in this blog, I will feature one grade level and explain what was happening in that class for the week. At the very bottom of the blog I will also give the websites that were used for each class that week.

I so look forward to having your child in Computer class--having fun, but also learning important computer skills.

Have a great weekend,

.

P.E.

Coaches Carter & Freud
Elementary PE Olympics 2016

The 2016 Olympic Games began on Friday, August 5th in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and the elementary PE program would like to stir our students interest in the world games by using the Olympics as our theme to begin the school year.  Selected PE classes will participate in some new games as well as many familiar activities but with an Olympic flair.

This activity will involve the classes selecting a participating country (other than the USA) and follow that country's accumulation of medals awarded throughout the events.  Each student will select a country of interest and post that country's results.

This project is contingent on the availability of the middle school gym which is scheduled to have new lighting installed as early as this week.  The construction currently taking place on the elementary playground and the August heat also restricts our activity space.

Coach Carter and I are excited about this school year and all the activities we have planned for our students.  Thank you for allowing us to work with your child.

Music

I am excited to begin this year with everyone!

We will be moving, creating, singing, and generally having great fun in Music class this year.

In grades K-4th, we have a new curriculum from which I will be pulling activities.  It will be wonderful and interactive for your children.

I plan to continue to share my love of Music with everyone!

Spanish

¡Hola amigos!  We will start our first week in Spanish learning how to greet someone and ask for their name.  Practicing these new phrases at home or at your local Mexican restaurant is highly recommended :)!

Miss Bumpus

Guidance

Hello EH Family!!  I am excited to serve you and your children as the Elementary and Middle School Guidance Counselor.

Elementary School students will participate in a weekly Social and Emotional Lesson as a part of their Specials rotation.

Middle School students will participate in a monthly lesson in coordination with their Bible class.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) allows students to develop the skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

During the month of August our topic will be "Responsibility."  Students will be challenged to show "Responsibility" at school at home, and in their community.

Mrs. Coleman

Pre-Kindergarten Computer Class

Parents will hear this every year but....'my how your child has grown this year.'  I mean physically for sure....but their little computer skills have grown also.  Most of them really struggled with even using the mouse altho some of this class was here in the Pre-School class.  Their confidence and willingness to try a new skill always amazes me.  I love to hear "I did it Mrs. Speck."
This week we had the video of 'The Tortoise and the Hare' taken from their curriculum guide.  Great discussion followed and then we reviewed the letter of the week which was Y, that was colored and printed from another website. The class period concluded with time spent on the website www.tvokids.com and the children had fun with an activity that was Dot to Dot with Artt.  They were able to draw lots of different pictures.
Such a precious group of children.  Thank you for being at Ezell-Harding this year and hope to see you again next year.

   Have a great summer!

Having the Pre-School 3 year old class in the computer lab every week is such a joy.  They always have to share something with me--nothing actually pertaining to computers--but that is fine.  It only takes a few minutes and then we are settled.  As with my other classes, I like to coordinate my lesson with their classroom curriculum when possible.  This week we started the class with a video of nursery rhythms that the children are familiar with and I love to see them sing along with these classics. Next we saw a 30 second video that turtlediary.com has introducing the letter they have worked on for the week.  Later that letter is colored and printed for the students to take with them.  Our fun program this week actually involved using our Earth Day lesson.  The children were growing gardens with different seeds, remembering to water, and pushing the sun out to help the plants grow.  They were so proud to see their gardens. Their motor skills have improved so very much.

Adorable children...

Have a wonderful spring weekend.

Kindergarten-Computers

Kindergarten students have been so busy since Christmas learning the home row keys of the keyboard.  As each letter is being introduced, the High Hat letter that is the same is reviewed.  We make new words with this letter and also learn which finger corresponds with the correct key.  This key is then practiced on Google docs.  Color sheets also reinforce the sound and the keystroke.

We will now begin working on their Safety Booklet which includes the child knowing a cell number of a parent or guardian and their address.  I have explained how this is so important for all children to know this information.  This skill was rehearsed at the beginning of the school year with their kindergarten teachers, so only a review is required now.

Your children are so smart and I am proud of the work they have done this year.

Have a wonderful weekend.

1st Grade Computers

Dot and Dash were hits this week during the 1st Grade computer class.  Our new friends are robots.  After several minutes of discussion about how robots are being used in our everyday life, the students were divided into 3 groups with 3-4 children in each group.  One group worked on a website from www.abcya.com/1st grade/Make a Robot. Their own robots were all different and very creative.  Another group worked on their keyboarding lesson and a color worksheet about a robot.  The third group worked with Dot and Dash and learned how to program these robots through  apps called 'Go' and 'Path.'  These groups rotated so all the children were able to participate in each activity.... a very interactive class and hopefully the children had fun learning about how vital robots are in our lives.

Second Grade Computers

Publishing newspapers, magazines, brochures are all fun and creative.  Second graders spent class time this week learning about the three ingredients that one has to have in order to make a publication....Headlines, Text and Graphics.  After discussion and viewing different examples, the students were able to create their own publication. I truly believe that someday there will be some editors of magazines and newspapers just taken from this group of students.  Great job....very creative.

Enjoy the spring weather.

Second Grade Computers

After a fun video from Brain Pop about President Abraham Lincoln, we saw another short video about symmetry.  Symmetry is all around us and discovering symmetrical objects just in the classroom was actually fascinating. Our website that was used this week was www.softschool.com, which gave us some challenging activities in Math/Geometry.  The students were asked to complete a symmetrical drawing by connecting dots, and then by actually drawing....an interesting and fun class period.

The weather looks to be nice this weekend....enjoy.

4th Grade-Computers

The snow was fun this week, but Ms. Clevenger's 4th graders were ready for class today. Since President's Day is Monday (school holiday for students), the students were given an assignment of researching a president and then writing a short paragraph about their subject.  They were encouraged to pick a president that they were not familiar with to learn something new.  We are using the website tntel.tnsos.org to gather our information. Learning how to find information, take notes and then transfer those notes into paragraph form is a skill that takes practice.  I was proud of the work the students did today--next week we will type our rough drafts and then print...assignment complete!

Did I also mention how proud I am of their keyboarding skills??

Have a good weekend and stay warm.

1st Grade Computer Class

Monday was the first day of February and our 1st Grade thoughts centered around Valentine's Day.  Children will be busy this week making their Valentines for their classmates, so our class time was spend having fun drawing Valentines on the computer.  Google drawings allows the students to be creative with their work.  An example was put on the screen showing the children 3 different fun ways to make a valentine drawing.  They were able to pick their choice and design their own drawing.  Using the 'shape' icon on this app made their work so much easier---and they look great.  Of course, they are displayed in the hall. We are having fun...and confidence and creativity continue to grow.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Kindergarten Computer Class

We all enjoyed the snow...it was fun for me to briefly ask the students about their experiences in the snow....winter is not over for sure, but doubtful that we will have another snow like this past one for a few years.

This week was extra special in that we did 'coding' in grades K-4 in the lab.  Even the kindergartners were able to understand the very basic principals and were having fun.  We were able to do this during our computer time and then with a special guest this week also.  Scratch jr was an app that was put on their tablets and then in the lab we used studio.code.org for more fun...

The classes loved it and these lessons are just introductory lessons to actually programming.  In years to come, some of these students will be programmers!!!

Have a good weekend.

Pre-Kindergarten-Computer Class

We are continuing to review the alphabet with these children.  The more the children are exposed to different methods of learning, the better for the children. The turtlediary website is fun and colorful for the children. There is always a short video of the letter and then their color sheets come from the Internet4classrooms site. This week after this review, we went back to www.turtlediary.com and worked on a color by number activity.  The students continue to improve their motor skills with the mouse which gives more confidence in their assignment for the class period.

Mrs. Tidwell's class comes on Wednesday and Mrs. William's class is on Thursday...always a highlight of my week.

Pre-School 3 Year Old Computer Class

All I can say is that our Pre-School 3 year old class is 'ready to go.'  Having a 2 week vacation was wonderful, but these students were happy to be back at school and our routine.
They remembered our procedures and came in quietly (well mostly) and listened for instructions.  I love our turtlediary website.  Reinforcement is given concerning their letter of the week--a short video and then the students color and print the letter.   I also demonstrate the activity we will be doing for the class period. Both of these assignments are shown with the projector/screen on the wall.  The children are improving with their motor skills using the mouse. I love to hear "I did it."

These children are a delight.

Happy New Year,
